08 Apr Baichung – Rayong, Sikkim
Sikkim is a small mountain state in India that has been recognized as the first state to be open defecation free and is also the first state to be completely organic.
I work in a school as a teacher here in Rayong, Sikkim. Over the last few years, we have seen the water quantity reduce dramatically. I don’t know why this is, but there is certainly less water now than there was when I was studying in school. Today water is available from this pipe only for the school. We have three more pipes but they never get any water. In order to make sure there is water during the school hours for everyone to use, we have to fill many containers of water. After the assembly in the morning, all the kids pair up and fill a 5-liter container of water from this tap. There is no water in the tap from the afternoon.
We are trying to come up with innovative ways to save water but right now we have not come up with a solution that is feasible. The advantage of this situation is that the children have learned the importance of water and how it should be conserved. But the situation is not ideal.
